New Years Resolutions for Your Employees

By Alyssa Laffitte on January 1, 2020

It is finally the start of a new year! A new year often comes with talking about goals and New Year’s resolutions. It’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on the previous year and evaluate. As a boss, it’s helpful when you provide some direction for your employees to set and achieve their New Year’s resolutions. In this article, we will discuss New Year’s resolutions for your employees.

Encourage your employees to put their phones away during work hours

It’s too easy for anyone to get distracted by their smartphone. Those notifications are so tempting! In the workplace, smartphones can cause employees to become less focused and less productive. One of the New Year’s resolutions you could suggest to your employees is to put their phones away during work hours. They might need to ease into it, but at the end of the day, putting their phones away will help them be better at their jobs. In other words, encourage your employees to keep their phones off while they are at work.

Encourage your employees to bond with each other

As a boss, you don’t want your employees to not like each other. Employees who are friendly with each other will create a better work environment. For this reason, a New Year’s resolution you could suggest to your employees is to encourage them to bond with each other. You can facilitate this bonding by hosting events, even outside of work hours. For example, during work hours, you could schedule a special employee lunch in honor of the new year. Outside of work hours, you could suggest an employee dinner. As your employees bond, you will notice that your workplace will be happier.

Encourage your employees to step out of their comfort zones

Employees love looking for opportunities to grow and expand their abilities. Doing so requires them to step out of their comfort zones and try new things. To encourage them to grow, suggest that they step out of their comfort zone as a resolution. “Growing” and “stepping out of the comfort zone” can look different depending on the employee. For one, it could look like learning new software. For another, it could look like taking on more responsibilities in hopes of earning a promotion. All these ideas will encourage your employees to become better workers.

Encourage your employees to establish a healthy work-life balance

Work-life balance is important to your employees. You could help your employees achieve their New Year’s resolution of maintaining a healthier work-life balance. You could do this by encouraging them to finish their work at 5PM, not expecting them to stay later or to work during the weekend. Of course, encourage them to take vacation time, too. You can also encourage them to not contact each other for work matters outside of working hours. When your employees have a healthy work-life balance, they will be better, happier employees.

Help your employees set attainable, timely, and measurable goals

Each of your employees likely has their own set of goals they want to accomplish in this new year. You, as their boss, can help them set attainable goals. One of the ways to help them do this is to ensure their goals are timely and measurable. Encouraging your employees to set a timeline for their goals will give them an incentive to work toward it. Also, encourage them to make the goal measurable so they can track their progress and be encouraged when they see they are getting closer and closer to achieving their goal. When your employees set attainable, defined goals, they will be better equipped to achieve those goals.

Make them accountable

As a boss, you should keep your employees accountable. When your employees know they will need to answer to you, they will be more motivated to achieve their goals. Whenever you meet with your employees, ask them about their progress on their goals. This will also shed light on any roadblocks they may be experiencing. For example, this will be the perfect opportunity for an employee to let you know they can’t achieve their goal because they don’t have a piece of equipment they need. This way, you will be able to help them overcome these roadblocks and help them achieve their goals. Accountability is important in helping your employees achieve their goals.

Be supportive

Employees need support from their boss. Your encouragement and support will help them not only become better employees but to achieve their New Year’s resolutions. Again, this can be accomplished when you meet with your employees and asking them about their progress and about any help they might need. A supportive boss is greatly helpful for employees trying to achieve their New Year’s resolutions.

The new year is a perfect opportunity to help your employees set and achieve New Year’s resolutions.
