6 Ways to Have Fun if You’re Taking Classes Over the Summer

By Victoria Robertson on August 2, 2018

Nobody wants to attend classes over the summer, but sometimes there really isn’t any avoiding it. In fact, more often than not, students get caught up in the summer school blues if they’re on campus for the summer.

But it doesn’t always have to be that way.

There are plenty of fun and exciting things to do on campus this summer when you aren’t in class. So, to help lift your spirits and provide you with some ideas, here are six ways to have fun if you’re taking classes this summer.

1. Attend Local Festivals

The summer is full of local festivals, especially in and around college campuses. Think of all the different types of festivals out there, from carnivals to music festivals and everything in between: your campus may have some of these festivals for you to visit as well!

Check out the local areas to see if there are any upcoming events you may not have known about and make sure you attend! You may just have the time of your life. And, if not, at least you got out for a few hours!

2. Go Hiking

Many students like to do the outdoorsy thing in the summer and go visit local trails to their campus. Hiking, or simply walking a trail with a few friends, gets you fresh air, exercise and much-needed space to get away from campus and enjoy the warm weather.

Pick a day where you need a break, or where the weather is nice, and don’t hesitate to visit any local trail and just walk the day away, I promise you’ll love it!

3. Visit the Movies

Not many people want to be inside during the summer, but for those rainy days and/or days where you just need to get away, going to see a movie is a great way to kill a couple hours and take some time to truly relax and unwind.

Plus, the summer movies are constant and typically huge, blockbuster films, so there should be plenty of options for you to choose from. Whether you go by yourself or venture to the movies with a friend, it’s a great getaway, no matter how short the time. Plus, it’s relatively inexpensive, so you won’t be breaking the bank, either!

4. Check Campus Events

Your campus is likely to have many events over the summer, some of which you may not have known about. I recommend checking the campus website and/or bulletin boards to see if there are any interesting, upcoming events.

Check these spots periodically to ensure you don’t miss anything, and attend anything that sounds like it might be of interest. Getting yourself out of the dorm/apartment and entertaining yourself in new ways is never a bad thing! Plus, you might find a new hobby/interest along the way!

5. Have a Picnic

The quad (should your campus have one), is a hot spot in the summer for students tanning, studying, reading or simply getting out of the room. However, it’s also a great place to have a picnic with a few friends and enjoy the nice weather.

This will not only save you money (as you won’t be going out to eat), it will also give you an opportunity to waste a day away in the sun with your roommates so that you truly enjoy the summer and don’t miss anything due to the classes you have to take.

6. Treat Yourself

Last, but certainly not least, you should always treat yourself over the summer. When you’re working hard long into the summer months when your friends are back home enjoying their vacation, you can easily get down on yourself.

For this reason, take some time for you. Whatever you need to do to unwind, do it. Take a bath, light some candles, visit the campus pool for a day, have some friends over for a movie night or game night, invite your family to visit you for the weekend, go shopping, cook a new meal, visit the local pet shop: whatever your method of unwinding, make sure you do it! This will help you to avoid burnout as well as to enjoy your summer on campus.

Summer courses aren’t fun in any way, but that doesn’t mean that being on campus during the summer can’t be. So enjoy the warmth and appreciate your campus, because summer doesn’t have to be so boring, even if you’re on campus!

Use these six ideas and brainstorm more of your own to ensure that your summer school days on campus aren’t anywhere near as boring as you thought they would be. In fact, you may even have more fun than some of your friends back home!

Have fun planning your summer vacation! And enjoy summer school!
