Planning Summer Travel: What To Know

By Danielle Wirsansky on May 5, 2018

The summer is a fabulous time for all—the weather is warm, the sun is shining, and the days are longer. For students, it can often be the best time of year, simply because school is out for the summer for most people. One of the other aspects of summer that make it so fabulous is that there is time to travel. After all, as Lin Yutang famously said, “No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.”

The world is a big place and there are always more and more places to explore. Use your summer wisely by seeing new sites and having new experiences. So as summer is just arriving, this is the perfect time to plan your travel for the summer months. But as you start to plan, there are so many things to consider so that you can make your trip the best it can be. Where do you start? Read on to learn the major factors you should consider when planning your summer travel!

Your Budget

The first thing you need to consider while trying to make summer plans to travel is what your budget is. Maybe you have been itching to go abroad—Paris is lovely in May—but a plane ticket overseas during peak season can cost at least a thousand dollars. Maybe you want to travel for the entire summer—do you have enough money to keep yourself going that entire time?

How much money you have to spend affects every element of your trip. Where you can afford to go, how you can afford to get there, how long you can afford to stay, how much food you can afford to eat. The list goes on and on.

You do not want to make summer travel plans only to have to cancel and not go because you cannot afford your trip. How much money do you have saved? How much money do you think you will make between now and when you leave? Do you have opportunities to make money even while you are away? Are you willing to go into debt to travel?

Make sure that you ask yourself important budgetary questions that will affect not only your travel, but your life, and make sure that your travel ends up a positive experience instead of a negative one.

Weather

Another thing to consider is the weather that may affect your summer travel plans. The question of weather is twofold—are you traveling to seek a particular kind of weather? Or have you chosen a place to go and now need to see how the weather will affect you?

If you want a particular kind of weather, that will definitely shape your travel plans. If you want a temperate, mild summer, the Northeastern coast of the United States might be a good region to focus your attention on. If you want to avoid rain, humidity, and intense heat, you might want to avoid the Southeastern region of the United States. If you want to escape the summer heat completely and go somewhere cold, you might want to skip town to visit a region in Northern Canada. There are a lot of options depending on what kind of weather you are looking for, so you want to do your due diligence and find a place that best fits with what you are searching for.

Instead, if you want to go to a particular place this summer no matter what the weather may be, you still need to know what the weather will be like when you get there. This will affect what you pack and even what kinds of things you can do when you get there.

Say you want to visit New York City. It is incredibly hot in the city during the summer months, so you want to bring clothing that you will not cause you to pass out. You might need to pack lighter clothes, as well as other accessories like sunblock, sunglasses, hats, or even choose your wardrobe with lighter fabrics that will breathe even in the sweltering heat.

Maybe you want to visit Orlando, Florida. Many people assume that all of Florida is accessible to the ocean, but this is not true. Orlando is not a coastal city, so you have to drive around an hour to the nearest beach. So if you want to spend the bulk of your time in the actual city instead of taking day trips to go to the beach, you might not want to pack your beach stuff with you. Instead, you might want to pack your most comfortable sneakers for days spent in amusement parks like Disney or Universal.

Wherever you go and whatever you do this summer, just remember to stay safe and have a blast!
