A Guide to Staying Safe While Playing Pokemon Go

By Carelyn Tiburcio on July 16, 2016

Everyone is talking about the new addicting app, Pokemon Go. The app is so popular that it has millions of downloads beating many social media apps, such as Snapchat and Facebook.

Pokemon Go takes players on an actual journey as a Pokemon trainer. Players go to different places to find Pokemon. Once they capture them, they could fight other players along with their Pokemon in gyms. There are also many PokeStops where players could grab items for their journey, such as PokeBalls.

I downloaded the app on its release date and fell absolutely in love with it. Every time that I go to a different place, I whip out my phone and open the app in hopes to find new Pokemon. But, there are limits with this game. I have seen reports in the news where people have gotten injured while playing Pokemon Go.

To prevent anymore injuries, here’s my guide to being safe with Pokemon Go.

First of all, don’t blame the app for anything that happens to you. The app clearly states to be aware of your surroundings while playing. As soon as you open the app, the warning is clear and fills up the whole screen. It’s extremely dangerous to be occupied by an app while crossing a street and driving. It’s dangerous to use your phone while in any of these situations so why start now? When it comes down to it, would your risk your life for an app?

You shouldn’t go looking for Pokemon at night, especially at places that you’re unfamiliar with. The game has many stops that are actual places, meaning that people stop at physical places to battle or collect items. This could be very dangerous for Pokemon Go players. There may be robbers who have used the app to be at stops, in order to trick people. Any Pokestop or gym can wait until the morning when there are a lot of people.

Lastly, don’t get competitive while playing the game. Believe it or not, I have witnessed people getting mad at each other because one of them beats the other at a gym. The game is made for people to have fun and not to be competitive. You don’t want to ruin a friendship over an app.

Whether you just started playing, or have been playing since its’ release date, Pokemon Go is definitely a fun and cool game. Be safe while playing!
