3 Ways To Make Goals That Get You Back On Track After Spring Break

So spring break is over and it’s time to hit the books again. Probably, like plenty of other students around the nation, you’re not quite ready to leave Cancun or give up the surfboards just yet. But there is a time for everything.

Your left-brain knows that and is yearning to get back to mathematics, analysis, and language — or something of the sort. First, though, you need to set some goals. Coming off a week-long break is hard enough, but without goals to reach for in the classroom and the study halls, it’s even harder.

Here are three ways to set some educational goals for the rest of this college semester, and every semester (You’ll need this after Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks, too).

1. Reassess your plans.

Learning is a lifelong process. In order to reach certain milestones along the educational journey, you must develop a plan and set certain goals. Periodically, it is important to take time to reassess your plans and goals.

Sometimes things change. For example, you may decide to switch majors or attend another college at the end of the school term. Whatever it is that changes in your life, be sure to keep your plans and goals in front of you so you won’t get sidetracked. Make sure you are still going down the right path to accomplish your academic goals.

2. Identify obstacles and take steps to overcome them.

Everyone faces obstacles in life. When you are faced with something difficult, you can do one of two things. One, you can sit down, whine and complain about the situation, and eventually give up. Or two, you can actively engage your mind to think positively and find solutions to overcome the obstacles before you. The people who succeed in life make the latter decision.

Identify what is keeping you back from reaching your academic goals and then determine to make the necessary changes to circumvent the difficulties that you face. You may have to redo a test or a research paper, or maybe even take a class over in order to pass it. Whatever you do, do not give up.

3. Strive for progress, not perfection.

Many people in life never reach their goals because they get stuck on perfection. As long as you live, you will never be perfect, but you can make progress. Making positive progress towards your goals is as close as anyone will ever get to perfection. There are many things that will keep you from perfection, but nothing in the world can keep you back from progress.

You may not read every page of every textbook, or pass every class you take with an A — that is not the point. You should strive to do well, but don’t get stuck and quit if you make a low grade or don’t grasp a concept the first time around. Keep moving! Making progress will allow you to maintain perspective, celebrate small victories, and give you the confidence to keep yourself moving in the right direction.

Happy Learning!
